Information needed to fit you with the perfect set of gas logs.
Before you come to the store, it is useful for us to know a couple of things. All the information is very important and will help us quickly narrow down what will and will not work for you, not to mention save us all some potential headaches.
Are you using Propane or Natural Gas?
We can do either, but when the logs are ordered, they must be specified. The danger here is that a mismatch can be potentially dangerous.
Is your fireplace vented or unvented (vent-free)?
If you have a traditional wood burning fireplace with a damper, it is vented. If you have a manufactured box, with a round opening in the top with a damper, it is also vented. If you have a manufactured box with no vent in the top, then it is an unvented fireplace. You cannot put a vented gas log set in an unvented fireplace.

That is dangerous as well as very messy. You can put unvented logs in a vented fireplace as long as the damper can be shut and secured.
NOTE: If you have they type of insert that has a permanently attached glass front, such as the Heat n Glow or some Heatilator direct vent systems, you cannot replace the logs set with anything but the original manufacturer’s logs and burner. In many cases, the burner is welded or built in to the metal structure and cannot be removed unless you take the whole box out. If you are not sure, we can come out and check.
Do you have a gas line already plumbed into the fireplace?
If you do, then great. If your masonry fireplace has a gas firestarter, that will work. However, some builders may have used a smaller diameter gas line than a set of gas logs really require. Don’t worry, that can be dealt with in most situations easily.
On the other hand, if there is not a gas line run, one will have to be run before the logs can be installed. The good folks at Wilhoit Gas, will be glad to help. If you are on Natural Gas or another Propane supplier, that provider will have to run the lines.
Is the fireplace indoors or outdoors?
If you are installing a set of logs outdoors, we are going to strongly advise you to make sure you install a stainless steel burner. We have versions of our indoor log sets that are stainless and designed for outdoors.
The reason is simple.
Outdoors, the combination of regular steel, heat and moisture will shorten the life of even the best of burners. If you use the indoor model outdoors, your warranty will also be void.
The Stainless Steel burner systems are guaranteed for outdoor use and will last a very long time. Of course, they are a bit more expensive. If you are going to make an investment in your outdoor fireplace, we encourage you to do it wisely.
What size is your fireplace?
This is very important. Vent-Free log sets can be bought with 18”, 24” 30” length logs. Vented log sets can be 18” all the way up to 72” depending on the manufacturer and the style of logs.
Almost every log set comes in a 24” or 30” version. Those two sizes fit the vast majority of fireplaces. Each manufacturer has specific minimum opening criteria for their logs. This is to ensure the logs can be centered and the control valve has sufficient “Breathing room”.
So we have a diagram for you to print and fill out, or you can simply write down the dimensions on a piece of paper and bring with you.
Remember all dimensions asked for are measured inside the firebox, not outside.

Lake Country Hearth & Patio opened at Lake Oconee in October of 2019, but in reality, we have been doing this for over 60 years. Lake Country Hearth & Patio is actually a subsidiary of the Wilhoit Gas Company, founded in 1946 by two brothers, Wirt and Judson Wilhoit.
